MEET DAVE

From Survival to Renewal

Dave once described himself in the most honest terms: “nothing to my name except a dirty T-shirt and broken shoes.” But behind those words is a story of resilience—of a man rebuilding his life piece by piece.

A Life Shaped by Trauma

Dave, who is recently sober, carried the weight of a difficult upbringing, the loss of his father, and limited family support. Over time, those experiences became more than memories—they became survival mechanisms. “I was just trying to cope,” Dave reflects. Addiction, for him, was not a choice of comfort, but a way to endure.

The First Step Toward Change

In October 2025, Dave completed medically supervised withdrawal treatment at Circles of Care—a critical turning point. Shortly after, he reconnected with Ray Lucas, a Peer Support Specialist with Providence Connects, someone Dave already knew through outreach and Daily Bread access points. Recognizing Dave’s commitment to sobriety, Ray offered something powerful: a lifeline. Through the organization’s housing program, Dave received a month of rent in sober living—giving him the stability he needed to begin again. Despite fear of the unknown, he said yes.

Support That Meets You Where You Are

From there, Dave was introduced to Meagan Schwarz, an intern pursuing her Master of Social Work through Providence Connects. Meagan became a steady presence in Dave’s journey, helping him confront anxiety, process trauma, and rebuild his confidence. Together, they focused on the deeper work—healing from within. Weekly therapy sessions included trauma-focused Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), helping address the survival instincts shaped by years of hardship, loss, and homelessness.

Setbacks, and the Strength to Keep Going

Progress was not immediate. Dave faced significant challenges—struggling to find employment due to his criminal record, and even losing a job opportunity when a hiring manager was unexpectedly dismissed before his first day. But he didn’t give up. He kept showing up.

A Turning Point

With consistent support from Meagan and the Providence Connects team, Dave began to change in ways that went far beyond employment. His confidence grew. His self-care improved. He began to envision a future filled with possibility. That shift made all the difference. After securing employment, Dave quickly proved his dedication—earning a promotion within just a few weeks.

A Life Rebuilt

Providence Connects brings its mission to life by weaving together housing support, trauma-informed therapy, emotional support, and access to essential resources like food. This integrated approach does more than address immediate needs—it creates a foundation for lasting recovery, dignity, and independence.

From the Grips of Addiction to Possibility

Surrounded by people who believed in him, Dave is now rewriting his story. “From the grips of addiction, I lost everything,” Dave said. “With the help, guidance and counseling services, I am moving forward with a life of possibilities.” And from the people who walked alongside him: “He kept showing up,” Meagan said. “At first, I held his hand. Now he’s growing his own wings.”

Hope, in Action

Dave’s journey is still unfolding—but today, it stands as a powerful example of what’s possible when compassionate, coordinated support meets determination. From nothing… to a future filled with hope.
